The Southside cocktail is a delightful blend of gin, citrus, and mint, offering a refreshing balance of sweet and sour flavors. Thought to have originated during the Prohibition era in the United States, this cocktail is often associated with speakeasies and the South Side of Chicago. Its light, minty taste makes it a perfect choice for warm weather or anyone seeking a crisp, refreshing drink.

Ingredients

  • 60 ml 2 fl oz gin

  • 30 ml 1 fl oz freshly squeezed lime juice

  • 15 ml 1/2 fl oz simple syrup

  • 6 6 fresh mint leaves

  • Ice cubes

  • Soda water (optional for a spritz version)

Equipment

  • Cocktail shaker
  • Muddler
  • Strainer
  • Jigger
  • Fine mesh strainer
  • Coupe glass

Instructions

  • Place the fresh mint leaves at the bottom of your cocktail shaker. Gently muddle them to release the mint’s oils, being careful not to over-crush the leaves.
  • Pour the gin, lime juice, and simple syrup into the shaker. Add ice cubes to fill the shaker about halfway.
  • Secure the lid on the shaker and shake vigorously for 15-20 seconds to chill the mixture and combine the ingredients.
  • Strain the mixture through a fine mesh strainer into a chilled coupe glass. For a spritz version, top with soda water.
  • Optionally garnish with a fresh mint sprig or a lime wheel for an extra visual touch.

Notes

  • For a smoother drink, double strain the cocktail by using a fine mesh strainer in addition to your standard strainer. This helps catch any small mint particles, leaving you with a perfectly clear drink.
