Snowball Cocktail Recipe

A Snowball is the quintessential British festive cocktail that brings warmth to winter gatherings. This creamy, frothy delight rose to fame in the 1970s but was actually created in the 1940s. With its velvety advocaat base given a zesty lift by lime and sparkling lemonade, it’s a taste of nostalgic celebration in a glass. Far from being just a seasonal curiosity, this creamy yellow cocktail deserves recognition as a classic that perfectly balances richness with refreshing effervescence.

Ingredients

  • 60 ml 2 fl oz Advocaat (Dutch egg liqueur)

  • 15 ml 1/2 fl oz fresh lime juice or lime cordial

  • 120 ml 4 fl oz chilled sparkling lemonade

  • Ice cubes

  • Maraschino cherry for garnish (optional)

Equipment

  • Highball glass
  • Bar spoon
  • Jigger

Instructions

  • Fill your highball glass halfway with ice cubes.
  • Pour the advocaat over the ice.
  • Add the fresh lime juice or lime cordial.
  • Gently stir the advocaat and lime to combine.
  • Slowly top up with chilled sparkling lemonade, pouring gently to preserve the drink’s effervescence.
  • Stir once more, very gently, to mix the ingredients without deflating the bubbles.
  • Garnish with a maraschino cherry and cinnamon stick if desired.

Notes

  • For an interesting variation, some bartenders add a dash of brandy or replace the lemonade with ginger beer for a spicier kick, though the traditional recipe remains the most beloved.
