Rusty Nail Cocktail Recipe

The Rusty Nail cocktail brings together two Scottish spirits in perfect harmony. This simple yet sophisticated drink combines blended Scotch whisky with Drambuie, creating a warming cocktail that balances smoky depth with honeyed sweetness. Despite its reputation as an old-fashioned drink, the Rusty Nail offers surprising complexity that appeals to both whisky newcomers and seasoned drinkers.

Ingredients

  • 60 ml 2 fl oz blended Scotch whisky

  • 30 ml 1 fl oz Drambuie

  • Ice cubes

  • Lemon twist

Equipment

  • Old fashioned glass
  • Bar spoon
  • Jigger

Instructions

  • Fill an old-fashioned glass with ice cubes.
  • Pour the Scotch whisky directly over the ice.
  • Add the Drambuie to the glass.
  • Stir gently with a bar spoon for 10-15 seconds to combine and chill.
  • Express oils from a lemon twist over the drink and drop it in, or serve without garnish.

Notes

  • Scotch selection: Choose a quality blended Scotch like Famous Grouse, Chivas Regal, or Monkey Shoulder. Avoid heavily peated single malts, which can overpower the Drambuie’s delicate honey and herb flavors.
