Dark and Stormy Cocktail Recipe

The Dark and Stormy is a highball cocktail with deep maritime roots in Bermuda, dating back to the early 19th century. This refreshing yet robust drink combines the rich molasses notes of dark rum, traditionally Gosling’s Black Seal with the spicy kick of ginger beer. The result is a perfectly balanced cocktail that’s both simple to make and deeply satisfying, especially after a day on the water. The name itself evokes the appearance: dark rum floating atop the lighter ginger beer, resembling storm clouds against a clear sky.

Ingredients

  • 60 ml 2 fl oz Gosling’s Black Seal Rum

  • 120 ml 4 fl oz ginger beer

  • 15 ml 1/2 fl oz fresh lime juice

  • Lime wedge for garnish

  • Ice cubes

Equipment

  • Highball glass
  • Bar spoon
  • Jigger

Instructions

  • Fill a highball glass with ice cubes to the top.
  • Pour the ginger beer over the ice.
  • Slowly pour the Gosling’s Black Seal Rum over the back of a bar spoon to create a layered effect (the “stormy” appearance).
  • If using lime juice, add it last.
  • Garnish with a lime wedge on the rim of the glass.

Notes

  • For the most authentic flavor, use a strong, spicy ginger beer rather than ginger ale, which is too sweet and lacks the necessary punch.
