Brooklyn Cocktail Recipe

There’s something undeniably sophisticated about sipping a well-crafted Brooklyn cocktail. This pre-Prohibition gem stands proudly alongside its more famous sibling, the Manhattan, as one of the five iconic cocktails named after New York City boroughs. With its perfect balance of rye whiskey’s spicy backbone, the dryness of vermouth, the subtle sweetness of maraschino liqueur, and the distinctive bitterness of Amer Picon, the Brooklyn cocktail delivers a complex flavor journey that has stood the test of time.

Ingredients

  • 60 ml 2 rye whiskey

  • 30 ml 1 dry vermouth

  • 7.5 ml 1/4 maraschino liqueur

  • 7.5 ml 1/4 fl oz Amer Picon or Amaro CioCiaro

  • Orange twist for garnish

  • Ice cubes

Equipment

  • Mixing glass
  • Bar spoon
  • Jigger
  • Hawthorne strainer
  • Coupe glass

Instructions

  • Fill your mixing glass with ice.
  • Pour in the rye whiskey, dry vermouth, maraschino liqueur, and Amer Picon.
  • Stir gently for about 30 seconds until well-chilled.
  • Strain the mixture into a chilled cocktail coupe glass.
  • Express the oils from the orange twist over the drink by gently twisting it, then place it on the rim of the glass as garnish.

Notes

  • Traditional Brooklyn cocktails call for Amer Picon, which can be difficult to find in the United States. Amaro CioCiaro makes an excellent substitute, but you can also use Ramazzotti or even a few dashes of Angostura orange bitters combined with a small amount of Amaro Montenegro if you’re in a pinch.
