Ingredients

  • 60 ml 2 fl oz Bourbon or Rye Whiskey

  • 15 ml 1/2 fl oz Amaro

  • 1 1 Sugar Cube

  • 2-3 dashes 2-3 dashes Angostura Bitters

  • Orange Peel

  • Ice Cubes

Equipment

  • Old Fashioned Glass
  • Jigger
  • Bar Spoon
  • Muddler

Instructions

  • Place a sugar cube at the bottom of an Old Fashioned glass.
  • Soak the sugar cube with 2-3 dashes of Angostura bitters.
  • Use a muddler to crush the sugar cube until it dissolves with the bitters, forming a paste at the bottom of the glass.
  • Pour the Amaro and bourbon or rye whiskey into the glass.
  • Add a large ice cube or several smaller ones, and stir the mixture gently for about 20 seconds to chill and slightly dilute the drink.
  • Express the oils from an orange peel over the top of the drink by twisting it, then drop it into the glass as a garnish.

Notes

  • For a more complex flavor profile, experiment with different types of Amaro. Each variety brings unique herbal and bitter notes that can enhance the character of your Old Fashioned.
