White Russian Cocktail Recipe

The White Russian is a three-ingredient dessert cocktail that tastes like spiked iced coffee. Vodka provides the base, coffee liqueur brings sweetness and depth, and heavy cream creates that signature rich finish. This is a built drink that comes together in your glass without any shaking, making it one of the easiest classic cocktails to master at home.

Ingredients

  • 60 ml 2 fl oz vodka

  • 30 ml 1 fl oz coffee liqueur (Kahlúa)

  • 30 ml 1 fl oz heavy cream

  • Ice cubes

Equipment

  • Old fashioned glass
  • Jigger
  • Bar spoon

Instructions

  • Fill an old fashioned glass completely with ice cubes. Pack it full because this drink is built in the glass and needs plenty of ice to stay cold without becoming watery.
  • Pour the vodka directly over the ice using a jigger for accuracy. The vodka forms the base layer of this cocktail.
  • Add the coffee liqueur next. Pour it slowly over the vodka and give it a gentle stir with your bar spoon to combine these two spirits.
  • For the cream, you have two options. For a layered look, pour the heavy cream slowly over the back of a bar spoon held just above the drink’s surface. The cream will float on top. For a mixed drink, simply pour the cream directly into the glass and stir everything together. Both methods are correct.
  • If you layered the cream, serve the drink as is and let your guest stir it themselves. If you mixed it, the drink is ready immediately. The mixed version will be beige throughout.

Notes

  • Kahlúa is the standard coffee liqueur for this drink, but Tia Maria or Mr. Black work well too. Each brand has a different sweetness level, so taste as you go. If your coffee liqueur is too bitter, add a small splash of simple syrup.
