Bourbon Sidecar Cocktail Recipe

The Bourbon Sidecar is a spirited American twist on a European classic. While the traditional Sidecar was born in Paris during the 1920s featuring cognac, this bourbon variation offers a distinctly American character with rich caramel and vanilla notes replacing the grape-forward profile of brandy. The bright citrus from fresh lemon juice and the orange warmth from Cointreau remain, creating a perfectly balanced cocktail that’s simultaneously sophisticated and approachable.

Ingredients

  • 60 ml 2 fl oz high-quality bourbon

  • 15 ml 1/2 fl oz fresh lemon juice

  • 1 teaspoon 1 teaspoon simple syrup

  • Ice cubes

Equipment

  • Cocktail Shaker
  • Hawthorne strainer

Instructions

  • If desired, prepare the glass by running a lemon wedge around the rim and dipping it in superfine sugar. Chill the glass by filling it with ice and water while you prepare the cocktail.
  • Add the bourbon, Cointreau, fresh lemon juice, and simple syrup to your cocktail shaker.
  • Fill the shaker with ice until it’s about ¾ full.
  • Shake vigorously for about 15 seconds until the outside of the shaker becomes frosty.
  • Discard the ice and water from your chilled glass and strain the cocktail into your prepared glass.
  • Express the oils from a lemon or orange twist over the drink, run the peel around the rim, and place it in the cocktail as garnish.
