Hot Toddy Cocktail Recipe

The hot toddy is a timeless winter warmer that combines whisky, honey, lemon, and spices with hot water. Born in Scotland centuries ago, this simple yet satisfying drink has remained largely unchanged for good reason. The hot toddy strikes the perfect balance between spirit and comfort, strong enough to warm you from within, yet gentle enough to soothe a sore throat during cold season.

  • Warm your mug by filling it with hot water, then discard the water after a few seconds.
  • Add honey to the bottom of the warmed mug.
  • Pour in the whisky and fresh lemon juice.
  • Stir well with a bar spoon until the honey is completely dissolved.
  • Add the hot water (not boiling, it should be around 80°C/175°F to preserve the alcohol).
  • Insert the cinnamon stick and cloves.
  • Stir gently to combine all ingredients.
  • Garnish with a lemon wheel placed on the rim of the glass.
  • Let the cocktail steep for about 1 minute before drinking.

Notes

  • Traditional Scottish hot toddies use Scotch whisky, but Irish whiskey or bourbon work beautifully as well. Each spirit brings its own character to the drink.
