Dry Martini Cocktail Recipe

Few cocktails command the respect of the Dry Martini. This crystalline mixture of gin and vermouth has remained a fixture of cocktail culture for over a century, not through flashy reinvention but through sheer, elegant simplicity. The Dry Martini speaks to restraint and precision, qualities that reveal the true art of mixology. Whether you prefer it with a twist of lemon or punctuated with an olive, this drink rewards those who appreciate that in cocktails, as in life, sometimes less truly is more.

Ingredients

  • 60 ml 2 fl oz London Dry Gin

  • 15 ml 1/2 fl oz Dry Vermouth

  • 1 dash 1 orange bitters

  • Lemon twist or green olive

Equipment

  • Mixing glass
  • Bar spoon
  • Jigger
  • Hawthorne strainer
  • Martini glass

Instructions

  • Chill your martini glass by filling it with ice and water while you prepare the cocktail.
  • Add the gin, dry vermouth, and orange bitters to a mixing glass.
  • Fill the mixing glass ¾ full with clear ice cubes.
  • Stir gently for about 30 seconds until the mixture is properly chilled and diluted.
  • Empty the ice water from your chilled glass.
  • Strain the cocktail into the chilled glass.
  • Express the oils from a lemon peel over the surface of the drink and drop in as garnish, or add an olive.

Notes

  • A true Dry Martini traditionally has more vermouth than modern preferences. Feel free to adjust the gin-to-vermouth ratio to your taste.
