Eggnog Cocktail Recipe

Rich, velvety eggnog is the liquid embodiment of holiday tradition. This centuries-old drink began as a simple milk and ale mixture in medieval Britain before evolving into the spiced, spirited treat we know today. What makes authentic eggnog special isn’t fancy ingredients or complicated techniques, but rather the perfect balance of creamy texture, warming spirits, and aromatic spices. A proper eggnog should coat the back of a spoon, warm you from the inside, and carry just enough booze to remind you it’s a proper cocktail, not just a dessert in disguise.

  • Pinch of freshly grated nutmeg

  • Pinch of cinnamon (optional)

Equipment

  • Separate the egg, placing the white in one half of your cocktail shaker and the yolk in the other half.
  • Add the sugar to the egg white and whisk briefly to combine.
  • Add the bourbon and/or rum to the egg yolk and whisk until well blended.
  • Pour the milk, cream, and vanilla extract into the yolk mixture and stir gently to combine.
  • Secure the lid on your cocktail shaker and shake the egg white mixture vigorously for about 30 seconds until frothy (this is called a “dry shake”).
  • Add the yolk mixture to the shaker with the frothed egg white.
  • Add ice to the shaker, secure the lid again, and shake vigorously for 30-45 seconds until thoroughly chilled.
  • Strain the mixture into your chilled glass.
  • Sprinkle with freshly grated nutmeg and a touch of cinnamon if desired.
  • Serve immediately while cold and frothy.

Notes

  • Traditional eggnog uses raw eggs. Use the freshest eggs possible or pasteurized eggs if you have concerns about consuming raw eggs.
