Ingredients

  • 60 ml 2 fl oz dark rum (traditionally Navy-strength rum)

  • 15 ml 1/2 fl oz fresh lime juice

  • 15 ml 1/2 fl oz honey syrup (equal parts honey and hot water, cooled)

  • 45 ml 1 1/2 fl oz water (traditionally hot water, but cold water works for a refreshing version)

  • 2 dashes 2 dashes Angostura bitters

  • 1 1 slice of lime (for garnish)

Equipment

  • Highball glass
  • Jigger
  • Bar spoon
  • Saucepan

Instructions

  • If making hot grog, heat the water in a small saucepan until hot but not boiling.
  • Pour the rum into your glass.
  • Add the fresh lime juice and honey syrup.
  • Pour in the water (hot or cold depending on preference).
  • Stir gently with a barspoon to combine all ingredients.
  • Add Angostura bitters.
  • Garnish with a cinnamon stick and lime slice.

Notes

  •  For a more complex flavor profile similar to modern tiki-style Navy Grogs, you can use a combination of rums (light, dark, and demerara) instead of just dark rum. This creates a more layered rum character while still honoring the drink’s nautical roots.
